Take it from Eric Nernberg

One do not have to have a degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management to become a restaurateur. You don’t even need to be a chef to run your restaurant. All it takes is passion and dedication to be able to handle it well and succeed in this business.

Take Eric Nernberg for example. The guy is a writer and he obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree at the Carnegie Mellon University in 1986. Unlike famous writers like Sydney Sheldon, Nora Roberts, Stephanie Mayer and J. K. Rowling, Eric Nernberg did not author commercial novels. The successful businessman used to work as an Assistant Acquisition Editor in New York and dealt mostly on editing. He also worked at The SUN, a popular tabloid in the United States. It was after his seven years at The Sun when he decided to make a major career change.

Having no background or experience in the food industry and bringing only his courage and determination, Nernberg purchased a restaurant in his hometown in Pittsburgh in 1994. Of course it wasn’t an overnight success. He started off slowly, working really hard together with his staff, until it became one of the busiest restaurants in Pittsburgh. He then opened a second restaurant, and as expected became a hit as well. Nernberg eventually sold both restaurants and moved to Thailand.

Together with a friend, they opened a restaurant/bar which again became a hit with visiting Marines. Now Nernberg is back to his first love, writing and he still manages a successful restaurant. Who would have thought a man with all these credentials would make it big in the food business? Clearly, it only takes courage and determination to do it.
